Why OFF COURSE?Off Course is a material-based making workshop. Starting from paper pulp, we add yarn, fiber, soil, hanji, and other materials to explore the qualities of the mixture. There's no fixed outcome. Mistakes and detours are part of the process.
Co-creating group
Making alone can feel isolating at times. Off Course is a small, informal community for makers — built for those moments. We make and share together.
Beginners welcomeNot sure what to make? That's fine. Follow your hands and make something undefined — a self-portrait, a form resembling your dog or cat, a lamp for the corner of your bedroom. Ideation itself is where your creation begins.
Structure & Materials
Week1
Materials overview, design, and structure building.
Cardboard, salvaged paper, Hanji, botanical fiber, yarn, flour paste, putty, wire, soil, and so on...
Week2 Colouring and decorating the dried piece, finishing, and writing an artist note.
Colouring materials, Hanji, fabric scraps, beads, yarn, modeling paste, varnish, oils, and so on...
PLEASE NOTE:
ALL CORE MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED, BUT PARTICIPANTS ARE WELCOME TO BRING ANY PERSONAL TOOLS OR SPECIFIC DECORATIVE ELEMENTS THEY WISH TO INCORPORATE INTO THEIR PIECES.

Cancel up to 7 days before the session — full refund

If the workshop is cancelled by the artist — full refund
This workshop requires a minimum of 4 participants to run. If we don't reach that number, the session may be cancelled. We'll let you know as early as possible and offer a full refund

FAQs
What should I wear? Something you don't mind getting a little messy — we'll be working with paper pulp, glue, and paint, and things can splash. Aprons aren't provided, so an old shirt or apron of your own is a good idea.
Do I need to bring anything? All materials are included. Just bring yourself and water to keep you hydrated during the workshop. (+ maybe a hair tie if you've got long hair.)
Is the space easy to get to? We're based in North Melbourne, near the station — details on parking and access will be sent closer to the date.
I have an allergy — should I let you know? Yes, please! We use flour-based paste, various adhesives, and varnish/oil finishes. If you have any sensitivities, reach out before the workshop so we can plan around it.
What if I'm running late? Arriving more than 15 minutes late may be treated as a no-show, and we're not able to run make-up sessions for anything you miss. That said, send us a message if you're running behind. We'll do what we can to work something out.
Can I reschedule if something comes up? Life happens! Check our cancellation policy for the details, but generally, the earlier you let us know, the more flexible we can be.
Do I need experience to join? None at all. This workshop is designed for complete beginners — we'll guide you through everything step by step.
Will my piece be dry by the end? paper pulp needs time to dry, which is why the workshop runs across two sessions a week apart. You'll take your finished, fully dried piece home after session two.
Can I take home leftover materials? Yes, take what you'd like to keep experimenting at home.
Can I book a private or group session? If you're after something just for your group, get in touch and we'll see what we can arrange.
