Make your own sustainable, durable tea mat using hanji — traditional Korean mulberry paper. Over two hours, we'll use the joomchi technique together to complete two tea coasters and one tea mat. To finish, each piece is coated with beeswax for everyday water resistance and protection. Add your own small, personal stitching for a finishing touch, and explore creative hanji work with us.

What is Hanji?
Hanji is traditional Korean paper made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. Its long fibers make it stronger and more flexible than standard paper.

What is Joomchi?
Joomchi is a hand technique for working hanji — layering and felting the paper with water until it becomes one durable sheet. It was historically used to make jewelry, everyday objects, and even armor.

FAQs  

What should I wear?  Something you don't mind getting a little messy  Aprons aren't provided, so an old shirt or apron of your own is a good idea.

Do I need to bring anything?  All materials are included. Just bring yourself and water to keep you hydrated during the workshop. (+ maybe a hair tie if you've got long hair.)

Is the space easy to get to? We're based in West Melbourne, near North Melbourne station — details on parking and access will be sent closer to the date.
 
I have an allergy — should I let you know? Yes, please! We use mulberry papers, beeswax. If you have any sensitivities, reach out before the workshop so we can plan around it.

What if I'm running late? Arriving more than 10 minutes late may be treated as a no-show, and we're not able to run make-up sessions for anything you miss. That said, send us a message if you're running behind. We'll do what we can to work something out.

Can I reschedule if something comes up? Life happens! Check our cancellation policy for the details, but generally, the earlier you let us know, the more flexible we can be.

Do I need experience to join? None at all. This workshop is designed for complete beginners — we'll guide you through everything step by step.

Can I take home leftover materials?  Yes, take what you'd like to keep experimenting at home.
